Evaluation of student knowledge will be assessed through daily activities, use of the Writing Process, projects, teacher made and HMH assessments, running records as well as teacher observations.
Math
Students' learning is supported with Eureka Math, hands on activities and computer experiences. Evaluation of student learning will be assessed through daily independent practice, basic fact drills, exit tickets, Eureka assessments and observations.
Social Studies
Students will be introduced to how the United States became a nation; the Revolution, key people, and the challenges faced building a new government. The impact of exploration is revisited through the introduction of western expansion of the New Nation. The development of cultures and civilizations and their contributions are expanded into the continent of Asia. Student learning is supported with Harcourt Social Studies: People We Know, literature, computer experiences, teacher made materials and trade books. Evaluation of student knowledge will be assessed through written work, projects, teacher made assessments and observations.
Science
Students will have the opportunity to develop both the skills and content knowledge necessary to be scientifically literate. The three major strands are Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Within these strands the Inquiry Process, History/Nature of Science and Personal/Social Perspectives will be taught. Technology
Technology is taught as a tool to support learning in other curricular areas. Examples of possible technology use and/or instruction include: word processing, draw, fundamental keyboard components, telecommunication, use of appropriate software, locate/collect information for projects and classroom instruction and demonstration. Evaluation of student learning will be conducted by assessing knowledge through teacher created assessment and observations. No grade will be given.
NOTE: You may go to the Arizona State Education Department to view the new Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards at 2nd grade.
Homework
Note: Each week, we will be sending out a Weekly Newsletter, regarding updates on curriculum, homework, assessments, and any other information you need to know.
Math Homework will be sent home 4 times a week. Please check your child’s work and have him/her return it the next day or as soon as possible.
A green reading folder with this year’s reading fluency homework will be sent home with your child. (A letter explaining the homework will be inside the folder). One story from the folder with the comprehension questions answered is due on Friday of each week. Just rip out the completed weekly assignment and send it to school with your child. Please make sure your child writes his/her name at the top of the weekly assignment. Fluency Folders should stay at home.
The reading curriculum is based on a six-day cycle with assessments given on the sixth day. Therefore, the date of the spelling test will vary. This date will be included in the weekly newsletter. A spelling list will be sent home on day 1 of each new cycle for students to practice at home. This test will be a combination of the weekly high frequency words and the phonics focus skill of the week that your child should know.
Meet the 2nd Grade Team
Mrs. Imdorf
Hello and welcome to 2nd grade!
Here's a little information about myself. I have been teaching in the Deer Valley School District for 28 years. I am highly qualified, and my experience includes teaching first, second, and third grade. I graduated from ASU West in 1995 with a BA in Elementary Education and an endorsement in Learning Disabilities. I have a Structured English Immersion endorsement and have studied gifted education. I have also studied counseling through the master's program at NAU.
I always strive to pass on my love and excitement for education to each group of students that I am blessed to have each year. I work to create a positive, structured learning environment that caters to individual needs and fosters a growth mindset. This includes establishing clear rules and routines, using positive reinforcement, and incorporating active learning strategies such as hands on activities and partner work.
Miss Hayes
Hello, my name is Mandy Hayes and this is my 4th year of teaching! I am a Arizona native and a proud graduate of Arizona State University where I earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I also have an Associates in Arts degree and an Associates in Arts, Elementary Education with distinction. I will be teaching at Copper Creek Elementary, where I attended school as an elementary student. I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to come back as a teacher and be a part of this astonishing school community. I genuinely look forward to enriching my students’ lives and hope to pass on my love of learning to every child that passes through my door. My goal is to instill love and enthusiasm for learning by getting to know my students as individuals, along with motivating and exciting the students. I strive to create a classroom atmosphere that encourages learning where students feel empowered, valued, challenged and a part of a strong community.
Mrs. Kocinski
