Battle of the Books
Information
DVEF BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
The Deer Valley Education Foundation (DVEF) will sponsor the 2024-25 Battle of the Books for Deer Valley School District students. The reading incentive program is open to students in fifth and sixth grades. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they read. The academic competition takes place live in the school media center. Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship.
Fifth and sixth grade students will be teamed in groups of two or three (with a maximum of 20 teams per school) to compete and test their knowledge in exciting school competitions during the 2024-2025 school year. There will be three rounds held in October 2024, January/February 2025 and March/April 2025. Each round has 4 books for students to read and teams earn points based on correctly answering questions about each round's books. The top team from each school will compete in a District Battle in April 2025, with the top team representing our District at an inter-district battle in May 2025.

About Mrs. Meyerhofer
Hello! My name is Amanda Meyerhofer and I'm the library clerk at Copper Creek Elementary. I grew up here in Glendale, AZ and have always loved books and libraries! I attended the University of Arizona (go Wildcats!) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English degree. I lived in Seattle, WA for a few years and obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Seattle Pacific University. While living in Washington, I taught English language arts at a high school. I missed the sunshine and my family so I came back to sunny Arizona where I’ve been raising my two children (who attend Copper Creek) with my husband Marty. I like to read, watch movies, and play board games in my spare time.
Digital Resources

Deer Valley Unified School District is providing each student with an incredible research tool, free access to the Arizona State research databases. We want students to realize that academic research goes far beyond simply "Googling" something.

Procedures
Procedures
Passes
Students visiting the LMC must have a pass, and need to sign in and sign out.
Students visiting the LMC during lunch recess must obtain a pass from their teacher in advance.
Students sent to the LMC on a pass must be able to do their work independently if there is a scheduled class at that time. If the Library Clerk is occupied with another class, students may be asked to return at a more convenient time.
Circulation
Kindergarten: 1 book for 1 week
1st grade: 1 book for 1 week (2 books for 2 weeks when teacher feels they are ready)
2nd - 6th grade: 2 books for 2 weeks
Reference materials are for use in the LMC, and are not to be checked out.
Overdue books must be returned before LMC privileges are reinstated.
It is suggested to students that books be kept in backpacks when not being read. This will allow students to have their books when it’s their day to visit the LMC and to protect them from harm. Please be mindful of water bottles placed in backpacks. This can quickly ruin books! Always use the outside holders.
Fines
There are no fines charged for overdue books. Students are responsible for the books they check out. If a book is damaged or lost, the student will be asked to pay for the book. Until the book is paid for or returned, a student’s check out privileges are suspended. Charges can be paid in the form of cash or check. The care of books helps maintain our library collection for all of our students.
Expectations for Student Behavior in LMC
Library rules and behavior expectations for students will be introduced during the class’ first visit to the LMC of the school year, and re-iterated throughout the year.
Students are expected to treat library items, i.e. books, furniture, etc. with respect.
Students are expected to maintain a library atmosphere by entering the LMC quietly, using whispering voices during their visit.
Once students have made their book selection, they may get in a single file line at the check-out desk. After check-out is complete, students may either take a seat on the chairs, couches or at one of the tables and wait for their teachers instructions to line up.
Accessing the Collection and Student Account from Home
Students and parents can access our Copper Creek collection from home by visiting InfoSearch. In addition to checking the availability of books and creating lists, students and parents can review a student’s account, including due dates of books on loan, overdue materials, and holds. Parent and students may access My Library Info by selecting the tab at the top of the screen and inputting the student’s Patron ID and last name.
District-approved research: EBSCO
Internet Usage
Computers are available for student use during regularly scheduled class visits as well as for students on passes. They may be used for assigned class work, research, and testing. Students and parents/guardians must read and understand the Internet and E-mail User Agreement and both must sign the Acknowledgements and Verifications form before students are allowed to use the computers. Computers are monitored and privileges can be cancelled for violations of this agreement. The District offers students space on the server to save school projects; however, students must provide their own USB drive to save files for use elsewhere.
